Post subject: First Visit

Hi, i am in Crete for 4 weeks during August. I would like to do some trekking and climbing. I am relatively new but have all my own gear.

I have already climbed up to HS4a (UK grade) V- or V (UIAA grade).  I would like to tag along with someone to partner them.

I will have my own car so able to get around.

Local knowledge would be great.

Advice on purchasing maps too would be grateful.

Thanks

Hi Trevor,

It will be almost impossible to find someone to climb together during your visit as there are just a few involved into climbing in Crete.

Regarding maps, the best are those published from Road editions.

There are also 3 guide books but not covering the whole Crete and its sectors. Two of them can be found here: http://www.korifi.de/en/?Climbing:Climbing_guidebook

The last one can be found here: http://www.lacorditelle.com/english/topos-2.php3

The most up to date routes are described in this web site.

Cheers

Hi Stelios,

thank you for your reply. I am surprised not many people climb in Crete, withso many mountains and rock faces.

Do you think it is worth bringing my climbing rack to Crete?

Also, the maps i was after are for trekking. Are maps available in lots of shops or will i need a special shop? I am staying near Gouves. What will be best 1:25000, 1:50000 or 1:10000. I have never walked in Crete before or used a Greek map. So ideally i would like one with enough detail to show contour lines and most paths etc.

Thank you in advance

Trevor

Hi Trevor,

For trekking, try the maps from a company called Anavasi. There is only one shop who selling them at Chandakos street in the city centre of Heraklion. You wont find them in Gouves.
It's up to you to bring your own climbing gear. I'm afraid you wont be able to use it without getting a guide.

However, we organize some times climbing meetings where you are more than welcome to join us but those are usually posted to the forums the same day or one day before due to work commitments.

Cheers

Hello Trevor,

If you have your climbing gear with you, I am a Brit who will be in south Crete for the last two weeks of August. We could meet for a day's climbing. Let me know if you are interested.

Keith

PS Stelios -- great job on the website update!

Hi guys,

If any of you are close to Heraklio this week (9-14/08/2011) I will be available for climbing somewhere in south, Agiofarago or Kapetaniana. Drop a message here if anyone is insterested in.

Cheers

PS: Keith, many thanks for your comments, it's really nice to hear good things about this web site as it took me many hours of web development along with climbing/research/photos etc.
