Θέμα μηνύματος: Tripiti gorge

I would like to cross together with my father Tripiti gorge west of Samaria. We are experienced hikers and my father used to climb a lot when he was younger so we have some experience with trekking. We will be staying on Crete in august. On internet I found only basic information about this gorge together with warning that that it is only for experienced climbers. I would like to ask if anyone knows more about the gorge. If climbing equipment is really needed then we would like to hire some guide who could help us with climbing this gorge. Thank you for answers in advance.

Tripiti gorge requires canyoning experience (max abseil at 38 meters) and that means full canyoning gear (harness, ropes, helmet etc). You will also need 2 days to pass the gorge and there is a lot of trek before reach the gorge.

It is not recommended to be your first gorge in Crete. There are various smaller and easier to try. You will need to carry a lot of water and it's extremely easy to get lost.

Some pictures can be found here.

Are you looking for gorges only in Chania area?

Θέμα μηνύματος: Tripiti

We already hiked several gorges in eastern Crete (Maza, Richtis, Sarakinas) and this year we wanted to cross something longer. But now I see that Tripiti gorge isnt the best idea. Could you advise me any interesting turistically untouched trekking path in Crete (preferably in forest)? We will be staying in Agios Nikolaos so we wouldnt like to travel to westernmost part of Crete. Thank you for ideas.

Θέμα μηνύματος: Selakano

There are various routes but it's difficult to explain them through the forums as most of them are not marked properly and you will need a GPS to avoid problems.

Having said that, a great place near Agios Nikolaos is Selakano. Carrying supplies and especially adequate water are essential. Get a map from Anavasi (the best Greek maps) and mark into your GPS the route from Selakano to Lasithi plateau. The first 4 hours are through a forest and then through the alpine zone of Dikti mountains. You will need around 8 hours to complete the trek depending how fast you are going.

Do not forget to take a lot of water.
