Zakros

Zakros, lasithi CreteThe furthest east "climbing area" is in Zakros. The words climbing area are in quotation marks because the routes there are few so it is not worth going there just for them.

Of course there are lots of things that can attract someone to Zakros: crystal-clear waters, good food, plenty of space for free camping and above all peace and quietness. So having with you your climbing shoes could be a good idea in case you need to escape a little bit from your commitments - wife/husband, children, etc. You can see two sketches of the routes below. The rocks are situated on the left beach of the village of Kato Zakros, opposite the second small bay formed there. The grade of difficulty is low, the pleasure, however, is unique.

Zakros, Lasithi

In the picture above all five routes can be seen. Starting from the left there is:

  1. "The beginners", difficulty IV+,
  2. "Fofo" difficulty V-,
  3. "Banaki" difficulty V,
  4. "Rampa"(Slab) V (V+)
  5. "Schismi" (Crack) difficulty V+.

These routes are no longer than 20-22 meters and to reach them you'll have to do an abseil a bit to the right of them (see photo) and then a traverse to the base. All the five routes were opened in summer 1998 by N. Giouzelis and S. Asmargiannakis. To repeat the routes you'll need a few small friends and a set of nuts. You can try the routes with a top rope too, as the quality of the rock is excellent. It's worth mentioning that a few minutes away from the beach there are more rocks without any routes until now. Maybe you can put them up next summer.
