Hochlakies

Hochlakies, Lasithi CreteHochlakies is a small traditional village of Eastern Crete, built almost at the entry point of a very beautiful gorge. It is located 25 km after Sitia, towards to Zakros village. For more information contact Assariotakis Angelos tel/fax (+30) 28410-28098, email angediex@otenet.gr , or at the Sitia Mountaineering Club (+30) 28430-25081.

The crags are on the right side of the gorge, just after the way in. The gorge ends after 45-minutes walk, at the sea in a very beautiful remote beach. The rocks are good quality limestone. There are seven routes in two different crags, but the possibilities for new routes are unlimited. One route is about 50m and new multi-pitch routes can be established. The routes opened from Assariotakis Angelos. Some routes are equipped with rustproof bolts and the belay positions have two bolts, making them ideal for top-rope.

For repeating the routes, 8-10 quickdraws, some slings, nuts or friends and a 50m rope, are necessary. For the two-pitch route is needed full equipment. The only possible accommodation is camping either at the beach or close to the crags under the olive groves. Water provisions should be made from the village. In the village there is an appealing old kafeneio where you can ask Stratos for cooked food, calling 0843-93407. The climate in the area is very mild and it rains occasionally, so climbing is possible from April until November. During the winter the small creek is running so it difficult to access the crags Climbing routes.
