Profitis Hlias

Profitis HliasProfitis Elias is at an altitude of 350 m, situated in historical Temenos 19 km away from Heraklion. The access is easy following the way to Malades (See maps) and the route is quite pleasant through the green vineyards with a view to Giouchtas.

The rocks of the area are of gray limestone of a really good quality on the hill where the Byzantine castle Temenos was built. There is the possibility for many routes of small expansion, mainly sport ones, with a difficulty from V to as difficult as you can! For the time being there are a few secured routes of moderate and big difficulty. Some further routes can be done top-rope or with bolts if someone puts them there The morphology of the rocks is various permitting routes with crevices, corners, walls, negative degrees and many bouldering tracks.

To repeat the routes you need 10-12 runners, nuts, friends, straps and a single rope 50 m long. The mild climate makes the area suitable for climbing nearly all the year round except from rainy days. The advantages to all routes are the inexistent access, the very good rock quality and the village nearby where you can buy nearly everything. Profitis Elias is surely going to be developed as a climbing area; till then have a look below. The routes in that area are the following: Agiasma area (under the church).
