Agio Farago, Part IV

Agio farago viewNear the sea is the church of Agios Antonios of Odigitria Monastery. The church is partially built in a cave in a rocky hill. It has a single aisle and two transverse narthex at the front which form a T with the church. Near the church there are many wonderful routes....Climb them now!

Name of route: Sto Hilos Tis Anosis

First ascending: Aris Mavromatis, Dimitris Zaras

Difficulty grade Project: about VIII Length 25 m

Rock quality: Perfect Bolts Bolts along the whole route and a ring at belay for descending

Starting point & access: From the beach towards the gorge, 3 min walking, situated next to the route of Zbynik Cepela

Gear: 10 bolts and 1-2 slings

Best season: All the year round, especially in the summer afternoons, as it is always in the shade!

Comments: The most overhang route in Agiofarago (along with Kurdos that moves on stalactites in the cave. It is fully equipped with bolts. This specific cave offers many more chances to open new route of high difficulty grade.

Agio farago caves, Iraklio

Name of route: Oneiro enos paramuthiou

First Ascending: F. Spinthakis & G Grammatikakis

Difficulty Grade: VI- Length: 90 m

Rock Quality: Moderate with some loose rock at the first pitch

Bolts: None

Starting point & access: From the beach towards the gorge, 2-3 min walking, situated just over the church of St Antonios (see photo)

Gear: Full climbing gear

Best Season: All the year round

Comments: A long route with some loose rock mainly at the first pitch. The first belay is next to a characteristic bush. The most difficult part of the route starts there crossing the corner and the crack straight ahead.

During a past holiday on the island the rope party of Danilos and Zanis from Salonica opened an interesting line (route) near the beach, a bit before Ariantho and a bit after the Roof. The name of the route is still unknown, as the last 10 m have not been opened. In spite of that, you can climb it without any problems until you meet the marine key and, of course, the last bolt. The length of the route is up to 25 m and is fully equipped with bolts. The route is clearly a sport one with a continuous difficulty grade of about VII+ and a rather dynamic pass nearly halfway. The grips are quite large but the overhang is bigger! What matters is that you'll enjoy it, that's for sure! The route can be clearly seen in the topo below.
