Post subject: Looking for climbing tips/partners
Sorry guys but my previous thread was blank ... I don't know what happened ... anyway I repeat here below ... my wife and I will be in Kissamos (Crete) from the 1st to the 9th August and would like also to climb but we don't know too much about climbing in Crete except that it is a great place to climb ... We will have probably a motorbike to move around but no rope and no quickdraws, I can bring my harness and shoes if I am sure to climb ... so we are looking for somebody can rent all the climbing stuff and, even better some locals to climb with, so far we climbed around the world and always found nice people ... why not in Crete?
cheers PS: to be a such a small climbing community, you have a great website ... a lot of important and useful information |

Post subject: dilemma
ahahah you are right Stelios, only now I realized that it seems impossible to rent any climbing staff in Crete ... it's a pity! I am still thinking what to do ... bring staff or not to bring staff ... this is the dilemma I have only 10 days and my wife of course doesn't want to climb every day ... I don't know if it is worth to bring everything, paying more for the flight and maybe climb only 2 times ... yesss it is worth :-) hhhmmm I will think about it at any rate, thanks for the answer roby |

Post subject: August climbing - Roby
Hi Roby, I'm in Crete from 27th July to 10th August. I'm considering dragging my girlfriend to belay me for a day, but I doubt it'll be worth the cost of bringing gear out and having to return the favour of being dragged somewhere on her terms. Hugely keen to climb for two or three days. If you bring a rope and draws then I'll happlily share the additional luggage cost (assuming you're looking to climb sport, although same goes for trad gear). I'm staying in Sissi, just east of Malia, around 200km from Kissamos. So a moderate drive for one or both of us, but it'll definitely be worth it. Has your research highlighted where you want to climb? Is the best location Kapetaniana? No worries if you've gone off the idea or the above doesn't appeal, just let me know. Regards, Rik |

Hi guys, If you end up driving in Chania the best sport climbing area is Therissos. It is not far from Kissamos but a lot from Sissi (2.5+ hours driving). What grade you can do on sight both in sport climbing? Rik, I'm much closer to you than Roby and there is a nice sport climbing area very close to Sissi (search for Malia).

@Rik: I like your idea and it could be great if we were quite close but over 2 hours driving could be an issue and risk is to be able to meet only once, if lucky ... at any rate I would suggest to keep in touch ... you never know ... my email is [email protected] @Stelios: thanks for tips! I will surely visit that site, maybe I am lucky finding some partner on site to climb with. At any rate I really hope to be able to meet you ... I notice there is also a nice area near by Plakia and my wife and me were planning to pay a visit ... beach and climb :-) maybe we could plan a meet with Rik as well ... For your info I normally climb sport and on sight I make 6b+ and some times (but not always) also 6c/6c+, then I can lead up to 7a/7a+. I like very much multi pitches route! Ciao, Roby

Hi Roby, I will try to come in Therissos (Chania) as is been a long time since I've been there for climbing and probably try a superb route called Venizelos, it is around 120 meters. Have a look here: http://www.climbincrete.com/en/Climbing/Therissos/Therissos_Sector_4 Stay tuned!

Hey Stelios, it looks great but I am not very familiar with trad routes, I have only tried 3 or 4 trad routes VII in my life ... if it is easily protectable, I can manage it and I would be happy to join you but you have to be patient :-) In case of sport route no problem, yesterday we made a 200 mt route, 7a max, 6a+ mandatory. I stay tuned :-) |
